Internet Safety

Broadband Provider

Most providers have some sort of parental control that can be enabled by logging into your account online. This is the simplest and most effective way of protecting your family as it covers all devices in your home that use the internet.

If your provider doesn't have parental controls then you can use the following techniques:

Safe Browsing

MetaCert is an add-on to Chrome, Firefox, Android and iOS that blocks inappropriate websites. Not available for Internet Explorer or Safari.

Add to Firefox

Youtube Restricted Mode

Restricted Mode is an opt-in setting available on the computer and mobile site that helps screen out potentially objectionable content that you may prefer not to see or don't want others in your family to stumble across while enjoying YouTube. You can think of this as a parental control setting for YouTube. Make sure that Restricted Mode is locked which requires a Google Account.

Click to Setup Restricted Mode

Browser History & CTRL-H

Web browser history is the list of web sites that have been visited recently. It allows you to see which websites your family have been looking at. In most browsers the history can be accessed by pressing the CTRL key and the 'H' key together.

Internet Explorer

Click on the Favorites "Star" icon and move to the "History" tab. By default the web address in the list will be sorted by date but you can change this by selecting the appropriate option from the drop down.

Firefox

Use the CTRL+H shortcut.

Apple Safari

From the small "gear" icon, choose "History". This displays all the sites you've visited. You can sort this by date (default) or alphabetically. Safari history also shows a small thumbnail which is a great help in recognizing a site in case you forget the address.

Opera

To bring up the list, click the "Opera" button (top-left) and select "History".
